About Our Bakery

Driven by what always inspired my forefathers’ ambitions and drawing on the experience of four generations of baking delicious breads, cakes and pastries, it is my goal to provide the community with an exceptional product, and to make these breads, cakes and other delicious products affordable for everyone.

A loaf of bread is a symbol of basic community spirit – whether referenced in religious texts thousands of years ago or heard in the desperate cries of hunger in war-torn countries a hundred years before or desired by mums and dads today to provide for their children in tough economic times – great bread should be available and enjoyed by everyone.

Our Products...

All our breads are baked on the premises on a beautiful stone-base oven and are free of preservatives, bread improvers, additives and other chemicals.

Our Philosophy...

When my father arrived in Australia in 1982, he was one of the very first bakers to introduce Sourdough breads to Melbourne. His goal was to bake a tasty, top-quality, healthy loaf of bread and make it available at a price that was affordable for everyone. His father baked breads and rolls for the local community in Holland during World War II and his father before him, baked breads for the stricken population rebuilding in the weeks after the First World War.

My family has been baking delicious breads and cakes – and serving local communities – for more than 100 years, across two continents.

When our little shop, in Camberwell, became available, I said to my partner, Rachel, “We need to bring back Krol Bakery,” the bakery that my father established in Melbourne more than 40 years ago, “…and we need to bring back a decent loaf of bread and make it affordable to all!”

Our Prices...

Prior to opening, my aprtner and I were shopping locally for a loaf of bread: a fruit loaf. The asking price was $9.00, but the store refused to take cash and charged an additional 1.25% for using card to pay. Being Sunday, there was an extra 15% surcharge because of “penalty rates”. I paid more than $10 for the fruit loaf… and as for the fruit, it was difficult to find any. I said to my partner, “There’s something terribly wrong about this… a decent loaf of bread shouldn’t cost $10, even more so when their price signsays it’s $9…” To be honest, the bread wasn’t even that good!

At Krol Family Bakery, we keep all our prices low ($5.00 for a white or rye sourdough, $7.00 for a fruit loaf that contains 80% fruit content). We accept cash. We don't add a surcharge for using card payments (including AMEX) and our prices are the same on the weekend as they are on weekdays.

My family has been baking delicious breads and cakes for more than 100 years, across two continents, and always at prices affordable for the whole community.

The fruit loaf is absolutely loaded full of fruit and tastes divine! Perfect fresh, toasted with some butter and great for a charcuterie board.
